Messiah

Through the close analysis of Bethesda’s Fallout 3 (2008) under the lenses of text, design and system, it is possible to see that the elements of the game all work together to help shape the player’s agency and journey through the game based on the moral choices and consequences of their decisions. The integration of the character creation and basic tutorial stages of the game within the narrative effectively encourages the player to create an emotional connection with their avatar and therefore promoting a more engaged interaction within the game’s world. The use of this allows the player to take engage in more of an exploration of the world, branching outwards from the main narrative to side quests that prompt the player to make a series of choices that carry their own implications to the moral traits of the character which can affect the outcome of the main narrative through this non-linearity of gameplay.
